When I depress cap lock, it shows as on but now everything types within lower case. The numbers still show as !@#$ even when I do this. It appears the the ivories configuration was changed, but I hold no idea how it be changed or how to change it stern. Thank you for your help.

I have the same problem sorta,
everytime I started my computer it dropped to bios.
I've simply never (22 years) had a problem I couldn't solve myself until I come across this one.
I had to appropriate my computer in.
below 1 minute they switched my keyboard and charged me 35$
30 for labor 5 for a unknown keyboard

umm..did you hold shift for atlesat 10 secs??and a nouns made,with a box coming up??(need more info)
Your shift knob is stuck.
Press it a couple of times and see if it helps. If you press it five times contained by a row sticky keys will apply read the box previously you select OK.
Use some rubbing alcohol and a Q Tip and clean around your Shift Keys.
look for the Fn button and Numlock ...hold Fn down and press the numlock ..the other article is regional settings in the control panel but i doubt you would hold changed it there
Go to device head and UN install keyboard driver later restart.
did you try shutting it down for 15 minutes and then turning it rear on and checking to see if it works?
i have a laptop too and it did that once...but i shut it down for 15 minutes!=D

use the vacuum next to the brush tool to clean the dirt away it may facilitate
